The implementation of Voltage Source Converter (VSC)-based embedded HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) systems supports the existing AC (Alternating Current) system through real power transfer and reactive power provision. From the perspective of the Transmission System Operators (TSOs), embedded HVDC systems facilitate the support of the existing alternating current transmission system in terms of operational security. This coordination is realized through Optimal Power Flow (OPF) calculations. In this work, a multi-criteria concept for optimal planning of HVDC real power operating points with respect to system security is developed. Existing optimizers for OPF problems include deterministic and metaheuristic approaches. Moreover, several optimizers from both classes are evaluated in a test system to assess their overall suitability for the resulting optimization problem.
